Recent developments indicate that former President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Apple products not manufactured in the United States. This move is aimed at encouraging domestic production but could lead to significant price hikes for consumers.

Analysts suggest that if Apple passes the full cost of these tariffs onto consumers, the price of iPhones could increase substantially. For instance, the iPhone 16 Pro Max, currently priced at $1,199, could see a price hike of up to $350, bringing the total to approximately $1,549.

Furthermore, if Apple were to relocate its manufacturing to the U.S., the cost of producing an iPhone could rise dramatically. Estimates indicate that a domestically produced iPhone could cost up to $3,500, compared to the current price of $799 for the base model.

These potential increases are attributed to higher labor costs and the significant investment required to establish manufacturing infrastructure in the U.S. Apple currently relies heavily on manufacturing facilities in China and India, and shifting production domestically would be a complex and costly endeavor.

Even if Apple were to shift its manufacturing of iPhones wholesale to the US, that would very likely represent a huge initial cost of setup, as well as a long lead time and ongoing labor expenses. So, that could also see Apple need to increase the price of its products, both existing and likely upcoming.

The next big Apple product launches are likely to be the iPhone 17 and the so-called iPhone 17 Air. If the Trump administration pursues these tariffs, then both phones could have a launch price that’ll sting even the most dedicated iPhone fans.

While the Trump administration pulled back from some of its most aggressive proposed tariffs, which were paused for 90 from the start of April, given the huge market upheaval they caused; one notable example was US pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 being parsed as the Japanese gaming giant navigated protential prices changes in the face of importing its upcoming console to the States.
