The aroma of bandeja paisa, a seafood casserole popular in Colombia, fills the air as Mario Montano and his staff greet customers at Mister Cangrejo, a tiny restaurant in Jackson Heights that specializes in food from the Pacific Colombian coastal area.

Although it’s only been open for 14 months, Mister Cangrejo has become a hot spot for Pacific-Colombian seafood. Cangrejo is the Spanish word for crab so the name of the restaurant, Mister Cangrejo, is a reminder of the seafood served there.

The walls of the restaurant are bright orange, reflecting Mr. Montano’s sunny demeanor; Colombian clay plates and baskets are sitting above the cash register, highlighting Mr. Montano’s Colombian heritage. Families come in looking for delicious food and leave not only with that, but with the spirit of the city of Buenaventura, Colombia’s main sea port on the Pacific Ocean.

The food here is made by all-Colombian cooks and “born and bred Colombians have a special way” of making Colombian food, said Mr. Montano, who is 48 years old.

Mr. Montano, a native of Buenaventura, now lives with his wife and two children in nearby Elmhurst, Queens. The Montano family made the journey from Colombia to New York five years ago, and immediately decided to settle in Elmhurst. Soon after relocating to New York Mr. Montano decided to open his own Colombian restaurant in Jackson Heights, a neighborhood with a large Colombian population. Mr. Montano is not opposed to going back to his home country of Colombia as long as his children get an education in the United States of America.

When asked what the future holds for his restaurant, Mr. Montano “plans to keep it going” and hopes to maybe open up another restaurant. The owner is invested in the success of his restaurant and makes an effort in going above and beyond not only satisfy customers but to give them reasons to come back. With over 20 percent of the Jackson Heights population being Colombian, according to the Queens Community Board 3, the food served at Mister Cangrejo provides access to familiar food that is appetizing, near-by, and reasonably priced.

Mr. Montano’s restaurant was one of the first authentic Pacific-Colombian restaurants in Jackson Heights and continues to please customers from anywhere and everywhere with the delicious food served and the welcoming atmosphere provided. The authenticity of the food and the excellent service provides what truly is the best of both worlds.

Mr. Montano’s children, 15 and 16, often help out in the restaurant, translating for the Spanish-speaking waitstaff. The waitstaff is treated like family in Mister Cangrejo and the family atmosphere is promoted in the restaurant because of how close the Montano family stays when it comes to managing the restaurant.

Reviews of Mister Cangrejo on Google and Yelp are generally favorable. Mister Cangrejo is known as an “hole in the wall type restaurant with authentic Colombian taste,” a customer from Miami explained.

The atmosphere is largely due to the the wait staffs friendly dispositions. In most of the reviews, the excellent service is one of the focal points; Google user Alex Meneses said, “I love this place. The waitresses take good care of customers.” In nearly every review the exceptional service is mentioned. Amanda Homi, a customer at Mister Cangrejo, described the service as “very, very nice; just wonderful.”

“It just looked from the outside like it would be a good place with authentic food,” Ms. Homi said. This is the reaction portrayed by most customers as well as the attitude portrayed in reviews.

Mr. Montano responds to almost all of the reviews that he receives online indicating his appreciation for the constructive feedback. When he gets a bad review, he responds to critics with, “Thank you for your comments and recommendations which motivate us to continue improving.”

Like many Colombians, the Montano family is scattered around the globe, residing in the United States, Colombia, Spain and France among other places. The diversity in the Montano family represents the diversity in the entire city. The diversity of this single family has come to reside in the homey restaurant off Roosevelt Avenue called Mister Cangrejo which values and will continue to value the service to all people that walk through their doors. Home doesn’t seem far off for Colombians living in Jackson Heights — it’s just down the street at Mister Cangrejo.
